Afraid of Technology?

You may not be… but there are definitely people that still are.  This topic came up on LinkedIn last month, as someone commented that people afraid of technology are “screwed.”  Now, I can see how this could be absolutely silly for some to understand, however – for others – this is a very real concern.  Mostly, for people that are in the older generations…

As a Gen X’r, I think the reason why I can relate to Baby Boomers & Traditionalists best in their technological learning is because my parents fit both of these areas.  If my father were alive today, he would never admit he was “scared” of technology – but, he would probably stay away from it as much as he could (with the exception of his cordless home phone, he loved that advancement in technology!).

My father grew up in the old school way & never was much for technology changes.  He was always amazed at how easy I found tech to be & couldn’t have been prouder to see me graduate with my Master’s Degree from Stony Brook University in Technological Systems Management.  My mom was reluctant to accept technology (& still is sometimes), but once she gets it – she sticks with it & is proud that she is able to do it.

Honestly, I never really understood my gift to teach others how to use technology until I was in my early 30s & was starting my businesses in 2008.  I realized that every corporate company I had worked for always placed me in the training role because I was really good at it!  Even in my early 20s, I would constantly amaze middle & upper management with my understanding of technology & how I could relate it simply to everyone, no matter their age.

More than that?
In my corporate days, I instilled a sense of PRIDE when using technology.
& I still do!

Today, I am more than happy to work with people that may initially be afraid of online marketing &/or social media.  As long as they have the drive to learn & dedication to make it happen!  I will always enjoy the “ah ha” moments of many & will never tire of teaching, as I work with many different small businesses in different industries.  With over 20 years of teaching technology under my belt, I find one thing is for certain:

Getting past your fear of technology is indeed possible.

When there is a will, there is a way!
