It came as a surprise to us all, but Facebook did it –> they changed their own rules.  & what a GREAT shift for small businesses!  In a nutshell, here’s what you need to know:

  • You can now offer a free prize to anyone by collecting likes or comments on a single post.
  • If your audience is small, you can easily pick a winner among the likes/posts.
  • You must communicate the terms & conditions of participation, & also release Facebook of any liabilities.

In addition, keep these things in mind as well:

  • Sore losers can lead to negative publicity (as opposed to the positive feedback you were expecting).
  • It’s not legal to ask fans to tag themselves in a photo your business has posted for a chance to win something.
  • Apps are still a wonderful tool to collect & leverage data for ongoing promotions and marketing efforts.

All in all — with the right planning, businesses can now do contests on their Facebook page easily, & can creatively engage their community.  So, you might as well give it a try . . . increased participation with your active fan base is always a big plus!
