Who Manages Your Social Media?

April 3, 2011

Here’s some news . . . in case you didn’t know, your social networking on the “Big 5” (FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn & Blogging with WordPress) is only as good as the person who’s in charge of it. These different platforms can radically change your business, but really – to be successful in this realm, your manager should have an openness to learn & an accurate understanding of how they all work together.

Here’s what I think the top 3 mindsets should be for your social media manager (& this may be YOU!):

1) Enjoy social media
I make it a point to work with clients that actually ENJOY using social media. If you have no interest in it, or constantly push against it – social media will not work for your business. Everything comes through your writing, so someone that feels forced or that it’s a chore will not be able to interest your audience at all. Mark my words — you will lose them & they will most likely never return!

2) Has real marketing experience
Just because someone has been using FaceBook since they were 21, doesn’t mean they know how to use the platform for marketing a business. Smaller organizations are more apt to make this kind of mistake, but only because funds may be tighter. The best managers of social media have experience with strategy, creating Web content and audience building. If you cannot afford someone with this experience, make sure they are correctly taught how social media success can be obtained, by a professional.

3) Uses fresh content on the “Big 5”
I am a firm believer in the Big 5. Most people don’t get the concept of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), but here it is in a nutshell: Fresh information spurs high search engine results. Your social media manager has to be willing to get it out there & keep on doing it without any lulls. It will take a while for your business to transform from the use of the Big 5, but you can rest assured that with some time, consistency, patience & a little passion – it will all fall into place.
