5 Years of YouTubin’

April 30, 2010

YouTube = Amazing!
Here are a few fun & interesting facts about this company . . .

• The site was started by 3 gentlemen that were former employees of PayPal
• Google acquired YouTube in October of 2006 for a cool $1.65 BILLION
• It’s the #2 search engine on the web (Google is #1)

Wow — so, not only is Google on top of the world, but they enjoy being the #2 slot as well (great example of a business smartly absorbing a competitor)!

On another note, YouTube is one of the best social media tools for businesses.  It should definitely be a part of your FaceBook, Twitter & blogging marketing plan.  However, you may be asking yourself, “How can a video sharing website help MY business though?”

Well – think about it.  YouTube allows users to upload & share videos.  Users from around the world can watch the videos, comment on them, share them with others & even embed them on their own websites and blog.  If you (or a consultant) have the ability to create appealing content that’s relevant to your service or product; a positive visual association with your business can build up your company brand, attract new customer interest & translate inquiries into sales.

*Secret Tip: The most obvious business use of YouTube is for advertising, however – try not to overlook other ways in which you can leverage YouTube. Visual walkthroughs and FAQs can be great for your customer service. Videos of you and your team giving public presentations, speaking at conferences or engaging with the media can establish & enhance your company’s reputation as a thought leader.

& if you’ve already experimented with YouTube, have a look at these other video sharing sites that are pretty big in the business too:
• Vimeo – http://vimeo.com/
• Blip.TV – http://www.blip.tv/about/

& if you’re a beginner, here’s a great guide for getting started using Internet video!
